What is Dry Needling? Dry needling is a form of therapy in which fine acupuncture needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points, areas of tension in muscular tissue or near nerves in order to stimulate a healing response. Dry Needling is a modern, science-based treatment of pain and dysfunction in musculoskeletal conditions such as neck pain, shoulder pain, shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, knee pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis or low back pain.

Is Dry Needling Safe? Drowsiness, tiredness or dizziness occurs after treatment in a small number of patients (1-3%) and if affected you are advised not to drive. Minor bleeding or bruising occurs post needling in 3% of treatments and is considered normal. Existing symptoms can sometimes get worse after treatment, but rare, as you normally feel the benefits post treatment. Dry Needling is a very safe treatment; however, the risk of pneumothorax can occur (less than 1/ 70, 000 -1.3 million). Local infections can occur if bacteria on the skin are introduced into a joint by the needle, but very rare (0.014% of treatments). Precautions will be taken at all times to avoid any complications and  short once-off consent form prior to Dry Needling is required, to rule out any contraindications.
